With over 30 years of experience in the HVAC field working with local residents, we have encountered just about every cooling system failure possible.  An air-conditioning system can malfunction in several ways. Below are some of the most common failures:

  • Electrical problems:  Loose wiring or faulty relays can cause motors to shut down abruptly, or could lead to a tripped circuit breaker.

  • Low refrigerant:  When the refrigerant level drops the system will not cool properly, if at all. The refrigerant can be lost through leaks in the coil, valve leaks, and refrigerant line leaks.

  • Condensate Line/Clogged Drain:   To control the moisture levels in your home, your system removes moisture from the air, which collects as condensation on the evaporator coil. This water then drips into the drain pan under the coil, and is drained outside through the condensate drain line.  This drain line can become clogged causing the drain pan to overflow in your home if it does not have a properly working safety switch installed.

  • Normal wear and tear:  Just like any mechanical item, over time some of your air-conditioner's parts will begin to break down and fail.  Motors, belts, bearings, filters, switches, fan blades, contactors, capacitors, control boards, compressors and coils should all be regularly checked to ensure they are in good working order.

  • Thermostat errors:  The thermostat is like the brain of the HVAC system.  It tells your air-conditioner what temperature you want your home to be and how often it needs to cycle on in order to maintain that temperature. When the thermostat malfunctions your air-conditioner is no longer receiving the signals needed for proper operation of your cooling system.

When to Call for Repair Service

Don't wait for a complete system failure to have your system serviced.  Many times your system will give you warning signs before it stops working.  If you notice any of the following signs give us a call.  It may be possible to catch a potential failure and avoid an costly repair.

  • Strange noises or rumbles:  If you begin to hear strange or intermittent sounds like rattling or banging, squeaks, buzzing or other unfamiliar noises, this can indicate potential problems. It may be simply debris and even critters that have gotten into your outside system or,  there may also be loose or detached parts causing the noise.  It could also be a warning that a motor is failing causing a loud noise when it starts up and shuts down.

  • Short cycling on/off:  If your air-conditioner seems to be short cycling rather than running for a while and then staying off for a while as it normally does, you could have an issue.  It could be a malfunctioning thermostat, a dirty filter, or possibly a fan motor or controller that has gone bad.

  • Not keeping up:  Sometimes no matter how long your air-conditioner runs, it just doesn't get cool enough in your home. This may be due to a dirty or clogged filter, thermostat malfunction, low refrigerant, dirty coils, or similar issues.

  • Lack of routine maintenance:  The #1 cause for system failures.  Routine maintenance needs to be done on a regular basis in order to ensure efficient operation of your HVAC system. Replacement of worn parts, oiling motors, changing filters, clearing debris, cleaning coils, and tightening bolts, screws and wire connections are all maintenance related issues that can prevent system failures and costly repairs.

  • Utility bill increases:  Increased energy consumption can be caused by dirty filters, dirty coils, or other maintenance issues.  Also, some electrical component may be malfunctioning causing the system to not run as efficient as it should.
