With over 30 years of experience in the HVAC field working with local residents, we have encountered just about every heating system failure possible.  The most common problems we run into are detailed below:

  • Dirty filters:  If your filters get dirty or, even worse, completely clogged, your heater cannot breathe and will struggle to push through sufficient air to heat your home. This restricted air flow places additional strain on the system and over time could cause the fan motor to overheat and fail.  Change your air filters regularly to prevent a much more expensive repair.

  • Normal wear and tear:  Just like any mechanical item, over time some of your heater's parts will begin to break down and fail.  Motors, belts, bearings, filters, switches, fan blades, contactors, capacitors, control boards, pilots, burners and heat exchangers should all be checked periodically to ensure they are in good working order.

  • Thermostat errors:  The thermostat is like the brain of your heating system. It tells your heater what temperature you want to maintain in your home and how often it needs to cycle on in order to maintain that temperature. When the thermostat malfunctions your heater is no longer receiving the signals needed for proper operation and your home will not maintain the set temperature.

  • Ignition issues:  When the pilot control or igniter stops working, your system cannot generate any heat.  In gas systems, the flame sensor can become dirty due to carbon build up, and the slightest amount of buildup can cause the sensor to shut down.  For safety reasons, it is best to have a professional diagnose and make repairs to the ignition system of your furnace.

When to Call for Repair Service

Don't wait for a complete system failure to have your system serviced.  Many times your system will give you warning signs before it stops working.  If you notice any of the following signs give us a call.  It may be possible to catch a potential failure and avoid downtime and a costly repair.

  • Strange noises or rumbles:  Because your heater includes a fan and a blower, it is normal for it to make some noise when it is running. But if you begin to hear strange or intermittent sounds like rattling or banging, or squeaks or other unfamiliar noises, this can indicate potential problems. It may be simply debris and even critters that have gotten into your outside system or,  there may also be loose or detached parts causing the noise.  It could also be a warning that a motor is failing causing loud noise at startup and shut down.

  • Short Cycling on/off:  If your heater seems to be short cycling rather than running for a time and then staying off for a time as it normally does, you could have an issue.  It could be a malfunctioning thermostat, a dirty filter, or possibly a fan motor or controller that has gone bad.

  • Low heat output:  Sometimes no matter how long your heater runs, it seems to never feel warm enough. This may be due to a dirty or clogged filter, thermostat malfunction, dirty or broken flame sensor, or similar issues.

  • Thermostat keeps resetting or Heat won't come on:  If your electric heater is resetting the thermostat setting, this may indicate a thermostat problem or could be caused by an interruption in the power source or a tripped circuit breaker. If your gas heater is not working, there may be a problem with the flame sensor or gas valve.

  • Lack of routine maintenance:  The #1 cause for system failures.  Routine maintenance needs to be done on a regular basis in order to ensure safe and efficient operation of your heating system. Replacement of worn parts, oiling motors, changing filters, clearing debris, cleaning flame sensors and burner compartments, and tightening bolts, screws and wire connections are all maintenance related issues that can prevent system failures.

  • Utility bill increases:  If you receive a bill that is higher than your average winter utility bill, this may indicate a problem with your heating system.  Increased energy consumption can be caused by dirty filters or other maintenance issues.  Sometimes an electrical component may be malfunctioning causing the system to not run efficiently.
